I feel my role in this world community is to make things that reflect our cultures
needs, habits and rituals. My
work is made from stoneware and sometimes
porcelain pottery. It is
high fired in reduction atmosphere in a natural gas kiln. I use the
potter's wheel and
a slab roller to construct
my pieces. There are several layers of slips, glaze and wax used to
decorate my creations
with contemporary yet
timeless designs. Also, I use sumi brushes to create whimsical scenes
of nature on some of my work. I
graduated from Southeast Missouri State University in 1995 with a BA in
Art emphasis in ceramics and sculpture and
also a BA in Liberal Arts.
In 1997 I apprenticed at Eckel's Pottery in Bayfield, WI. Shortly
after I luckily stumbled
into Banner Oak Pottery in
New London, MN where I was able to sharpen my skills and work alongside
some of the best potters
in the world. I also did
production work intermittently for Rockhard Stoneware in Champlin, MN
with some ridiculously
talented artists and
Caradori Pottery in Eau Claire WI with David Caradori who is a master
potter and chef. I have been
self-employed making my
living entirely off of pottery since 1998. I
enjoy the usefulness of the
ceramic object. Pieces that work well in our hands and in our
kitchens. Entertaining
our tactile and visual
senses and also our families and friends with service. Pieces should be
fun to use and fun to
look at and proud to give. I have dedicated my life to making the best work
I can. |
